Types of Barcode Scanner

- May 27, 2020-

The Barcode Scanner is a high-tech product that is closely integrated with optical, mechanical, electronic, and software applications. It is the third-generation main computer input device after the keyboard and mouse. Since scanner comes out in the 1980s, it has been rapidly developed and widely used. From the most direct pictures, photos, films to all kinds of drawings, graphics and manuscript materials, you can use the scanner to enter the computer, and then realize these images Information processing, management, use, storage or output.

There are many types of barcode scanner, some common models as following,

  1. Handheld barcode scanner: The handheld scanner is a product formed by the technology introduced in 1987, and its appearance is very similar to the barcode scanning gun used by the cashier in the supermarket. The vast majority of handheld scanners use CIS technology with an optical resolution of 200 dpi. There are multiple types of black and white, grayscale, and color. The color type is generally 18-bit color. There are also some high-end products that use CCD as the photosensitive device, which can achieve true color and good scanning effect.

2. Small drum barcode scanner. This is an intermediate product of a hand-held barcode scanner and a desktop scanner (newly appeared in recent years, because it is built-in power supply and small size is called a notebook scanning gun) This product mostly uses CIS technology, and the optical resolution is 300dpi, there are two kinds of color and grayscale, color model is generally 24-bit color. There are also a few small drum scanner that use CCD technology, and the scanning effect is significantly better than CIS technology products, but due to structural limitations, the volume is generally significantly larger than CIS technology products. The design of the small roller type is to fix the lens of the scanner, and move the object to be scanned through the lens to scan. It works like a printer. The object to be scanned must pass through the machine before being sent out. Therefore, the scanned object should not be too thick. The biggest advantage of this kind of scanner is that it is small in size, but because of its many limitations in use, for example, it can only scan thin paper, and the range cannot exceed the size of the scanner.

3. Platform scanner. Also known as flatbed scanners and desktop scanners, most of the scanners currently on the market are flatbed scanners and are now mainstream. The optical resolution of this type of scanner is between 300dpi and 8000dpi, the number of color bits is from 24 to 48, and the scanner format is generally A4 or A3. The advantage of the flatbed type is that like using a copier, as long as the upper cover of the scanner is opened, no matter it is a book, newspaper, magazine, or photo film, it can be put on and scanned, which is quite convenient, and the scanning effect is also in all common types of scanner the best.

Others include large-format scanner, pen-type scanner, bar code scanner, and film scanner for large-format scanning (note that it is not a flat-bed scanning gun plus a trans-scan, the effect is much better, and the price is of course expensive), physical scanning gun (It is not a flatbed scanning gun with physical scanning capability, which is somewhat similar to a digital camera), and there are many drum scanning guns mainly used in the field of industrial printing and typesetting.
